Politically, when we say that we don't believe in higher taxes yet we do believe in more government programs. The taxes are required to fund the programs.
When people say that any religion is good if it works for you they are taking opposing sides because most religions do not agree that there is more than one true religion.

What kind of nonsense answer is that? Ok, here's my answer following Sam's model:
Some Republicans (I'm not saying all of them, respectful intentions) believe in the 'right' to a divorce. However, some believe same sex marriage is wrong as well. They believe in breaking a bond of marriage made in God's name in order to remarry and have adulterous sex with some other person, whereas the don't think they should allow two men,who love each other and are faithful life-long partners, to marry or join together in a civil union. The last time I looked the right side was more into protecting their own pocketbooks and waging war without a reason and without an achievable purpose, and emphasizing minimal government intrusion into people's lives; however, when it comes to two devoted partners who simply want the same rights other adult, consenting couples want, they think it's the government's place to violate the separation of church and state in order to deny these people the rights they deserve. I see this as completely contradictory and pointless.
Now for my real answer, which hopefully is a little freer of the b.s. and stereotypes of the above answer:
People choose opposite sides of different issues for various reasons. Some people vote Democrat, while some vote Republican. Some people go to church, some people shun organized religion. Some people are "right-to-lifers", while others think a woman's body is her own. Some people accept of evolutionary theory, while others don't believe in it.
More often than not, however, people fall in some gray area somewhere in the middle: they believe in a woman's right to an abortion, but only in limited circumstances (during the first trimester or if the mother's life is in danger), or they go to church but also accept evolutionary theory as fact. Or perhaps they oppose gay marriage but have no problem with the concept of a state-sponsored civil union so long as their own church is not required to perform one (which is where separation of church and state come in.)

Some Democrats(I'm not saying all of them, respectful intentions) believe in the 'right' to an abortion. However, some believe Capital Punishment is wrong as well. They believe in killing an innocent child whereas the don't think they should kill a convicted criminal, who, most likely, has done something horrible. The last time I looked the left side was more into the world wildlife foundation and saving the trees and saving life in general, however, when it comes to a teen girl hoping that her parents will never know what she did with the guy next store, abortions are the best ways to end innocent life. I see this as completely contradictory and pointless.

You donot have to look outside , elsewhere. The example is in you. You.( or me)
Constantly, in life , we mask our true feelings and opinions and we put up an outside image that satisfies others. The views / feelings that we express are opposite of our true feelings inside. Most of us never live for ourselves. we live for the others. We justify this in many ways.
We donot want to hurt others. We want to put across a good side of ourselves.
