Make the punishment for rape more stringent. But first clearly define as to what constitutes rape. Even sex with promise to marry should be included under rape. Unwanted pregnancy with unmarried women should also form a theme for further policy formulation. It must be given a serious rethinking in India. I fully agree with you.

It is people who have to push for legislation to make selective abortion a crime. This may cause some to shout "It is unfair for this reason or that", but this seems to be one of the solution.
Secondly, strong social leaders have to make people realize that demanding high dowry by men (& their families) is one of the reason for selective abortion. Both issues need simultaneous push to avoid the dsisaster you are pointing to.

Maybe they should make the punishment for this form of crime more harsh. I'd push for life in prison or the death penalty.
