Writing thank you notes has a form to it and it's best to follow the form.

1. Dear (don't skip this; people often forget it)
2. Thank you for If it's a gift card or cash, it's best to say "your generosity" instead of the cash value.
3. State something specific that is nice about the gift or that you like about it. For a gift card, you can put " is my favorite store" or "I'm looking forward to exploring . If you think you know what you are going to buy with the gift card, say "I'm looking forward to getting some new pillows/electronics/movies/whatever," or "I'll think of you whenever I use my new blender" or "I love the new stemware I got with the giftcard" (as long as it's not something intimate, like sheets or towels) but don't go overboard with an itemized list or anything.
4. Thank you for thinking of me at Christmas OR Thank you for your thoughtfulness.
5. Sincerely or With thanks or Yours truly or Love or however you want to close it
6.

That's it. Thank you notes are not a time to gossip or ask questions or pass on any news.

It's best for it to be a handwritten note sent through the mail or put in an employee in-box if it's someone you work with. The note should be on a card, but it can be a plain notecard and not a "Thank you" card. Just don't type it, e-mail it or put in on regular stationary.

Good luck

I must be a real jerk, I have NEVER sent a thank you for a Christmas gift. I either give them a hug and kiss in person with a heartfelt thanks or I call them on the phone if I didn't get it in person and thank them that way. Maybe I need to get with the times!

Say thank you for your thoughtful gift. It will be very useful. Or if you already bought something with it you could say, thank them for the gift you were able to purchase with their gift card.
