I'd like to be able to access the internet with both of my computers by exchanging the enternet cable. There is a functioning connection (DSL). However, when I unplug the enternet cable and connect it to my other computer, win xp, it dosen't establish a connection. How do I get my computer to realize where the connection is??

You need to reset the dsl router. Unplug it and plug it back in before you switch it between computers so that it can refresh ip info and all the numbers it needs.

You might have to enable the local connection under network neighbourhood. Also ensure all of the protocols are installed. Like TCP/IP. You will also have to register the MAC address of the other machine with your ISP in most cases. Usually the setup software takes care of this but I never use it. Also make sure your NIC is installed and configured correctly.

edit: I am assuming you are connecting directly to the DSL modem and not through a router. If you are going through a router, you have to ensure that you are configured there as well as far as the MAC address and if there is any type of IP leases and MAC filtering enabled.

If the cable seems kinda like a telephone cord however the plug is slightly wider, then this is an ethernet cable and in case you haven't any longer have been given an comparable port in the back of the workstation you will possibly could desire to locate and purchase an ethernet card that helps Windows98. (you are able to desire to additionally probable locate out in case you have ninety 8 or 98SE, there's a distinction between the two variations that could remember later on.)

Make sure the cable size is no more than 8.0 Meter. If it is than it will not properly connect due to packet loss(but here are exceptions also some modem connects itself even on 15 mt). example is "i'm" with 12mt distance)
