It's not good to only choose one.
So, I recommend you balance it out. Too much competition with others can make you addicted and competing with yourself can make you lonely and depressed, too much of any of them will drive you insane. As I said before, you should balance it out.

Compete with yourself, but don't forget one very important thing. If you have no clue what others are doing, or what they're about, if you don't know where they're headed, then they would have a jump on you no matter what you know.
Others may have an inside track on something that you have not heard of. NETWORKING with other that have the same interests is the best way to go. You'll then know where you are, where you stand as far as competition and what to do to get to where you're going. Make sense???

Dont compete, with yourself or anyone else, the spirit of competition will overtake you in everything you do. Rather quest for a desire to be the best, do the best and continually ask yourself if this is your best!
Motivation to excel in everything you do will automatically ensure that you are ahead. If you start competing with others there are talents that other have and you will not have and there will be something that you lack in. You will start concentrating on things you dont have and automatically fall back without realising that you are spending time on something you will never achieve.
YOU ARE GOOD AT SOMETHING - FIND THAT !
