12 Monkeys is a fantastic film that follows Bruce Willis after he is sent into the past (1996) to research possible causes of a virus that wipes out most of humanity in the future. Wonderful film, great acting.

It is also very action/philosophy-centred, and explores time travel as well, so I'm not sure if this would be of prime interest to you.

You mean like scientific research?

There aren't many I've seen that are very realistic. These are ones I've seen that are good.

The Andromeda Strain (fiction - the book gets a lot more into the research they are doing than I remember the movie doing)

Altered States (fiction and very fuzzy science but some real talk about neurotransmitters and cool anyway - and you get to hear Charles Haid say, "This ain't no serotonin antagonist we're talkin' 'bout" which got us giddy when we were in grad school)

October Sky (true story about bunch of kids researching rockets)

Fat Man and Little Boy (True story about Manhattan project and the first A-bomb)

"A Beautiful Mind" is a great movie about a mathamatics researcher who gets the gorgeous gal in the end.

"Contact" starts with giving a good feel for impassioned scientists working on something that is routinely boring and then suddenly gets more exciting than they could have ever imagined. Then it gets schlocky sci-fi-y

"Apollo 13" does a great job showing the guys who did the research and engineering stretching their minds beyond what they had learned to come up with a solutino to a nearly impossible problem.

Geez, I was stretching there to get "research" movies, but there aren't really many good ones that have been made.

Oh, I've got to add:
"Ulee's Gold" about a father who's son has a rare disease and he tries on his own to find a cure. I think it might be a true story.

Fatman And Little Boy is about the constuction of the atom bomb during WWII. I highly recommend this one since it shows how all the teams had to work together.

The Andromada Strain, based on Micheal Crichton's novel, features a team of scientists trying to stop a virus from outer space. Sorely outdated by today's standards, it was pretty cutting edge back in the late 60's-early 70's.

Outbreak, staring Dustin Hoffman features the scientist trying to stop a diseased monkey from causing a plague.

Kinsey is a good one. It's based on a true story about a human sex behaviour researcher in the 50s. Liam Neeson plays Alfred Kinsey.

Medicine Man is a great movie about finding the cure for cancer in the jungle. It has Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco.
