It won't work, here is what I have hooked up, can you help? Modem is working properly when hooked up directly to my desktop; now I put the modem to the WAN and the 1st port wired to the desktop; this should work but I keep getting an error saying it cannot connect and asks me if I want to redial? Now my lap top picks up the signal and is connected so it is hooked up right, but no internet access because the desktop won't connect. What do I do? I'm using Bruce Telecom (ontario) but they don't give any support for wireless networking.

Right,

You have to setup your router, and wireless network configuration.

At the desktop, you need to configure your router, so that your computer can use the internet resources.

Open a Explorer window, and enter the address: http://192.168.0.1
This is the internal configuration address of your router.

It will probably prompt you for a username and password.
Try username: admin, and for the password type, password

You should see the router setup page.
Often there is a provision for automaticaly configure the router.
If it is available, do that.
That should pretty much do it for the hardwired PC.
If there is a test button, it should take you to the router's web page. If that worked, you can now connect other pc's to the router, and they should work.

It sounds like your notebook is wireless? If so, in the router configuration page, there will be menus for setting up encryption.
You need to name your connection, and should setup encryption.

Your laptop should be able to connect, but you will need to configure the connection type, and encryption. You might just try it without encryption first, to get things going, then after that works, add encryption on the configuration page, and update the connection on the laptop with the encryption method and key.

Search for setup instructions on the web for your equipment.

You should post your OS, router model number, and laptop wireless card model, so we can be of more assistance.

the main computer is not getting the dsl signal from the router that's why it's trying to dial an access number.make sure that the router is installed properly.just run the disk that comes with it.after the installation, you would know if the main computer is communicating with the router if you're getting a default gateway ip when you do an ipconfig--(Start>Run,type cmd on the run field, type ipconfig on the command prompt & hit Enter on keyboard)--it should display your ip address/subnet mask & default gateway.once the main computer is hooked up,run the router installer on the laptop for wireless set-up.

fireplace your community representative. The ISP has NO impression on the variety of a on the spot LAN. i've got faith your 3 Mbps DSL is sufficient. Your on the spot LAN is the priority. you probable desire a handful of on the spot get admission to factors to conceal your motel all under pressure out back to an significant community change. those on the spot get admission to factors won't be able to intrude with one yet another so enjoyed ones grade instruments are no longer suitable. you like extra robust, solid multiaccess factors. I propose you talk potential over Ethernet (PoE) varieties so which you will desire to run purely the community cable (and not a one hundred twenty v line to boot) and use a PoE able community change. A "mesh" shape is probable terrific. Proxim markets structures for this that paintings properly and that they could be your perfect selection. you will want somebody acquainted with a multipoint on the spot device besides. i do no longer think your IT individual has the flexibility instruments for this.

You haven't configured the router yet. It's NOT automatic! Read the router documentation on how to configure it!
