Consumer Reports states that HVAC systems (furnaces and a/c) manufactured by American Standard companies (Trade names are TRANE, & American Standard) are rated the best. Goodman products are rated extrememly low do to frequency of repairs.
Goodman is a price furnace (low prices to sell their rather inferior products) and Trane by American Standard are quality products.
Check your dealers out thoroughly. A dealer with factory trained employees, good service technicians, a office support staff can make the installaiton go easy. They also carry all the necessary insurances to proctect you. Financing can be arrangaed thru them. Stay away from part-time people who only install as a side line.

When you are dealing with residential ducted split air conditioning products what you need to know is that the heart of the system is the compressor. The compressor is the component which will cost the most to repair. Most condensing units are comprised of 5 prime components: compressor, condenser fan (motor and blade), condensing coil, compressor contactor, and run capacitor
Generally the parts are all coming from the same manufactures. The thing that is most important I have learned over the 18 or so years that I have been doing HVAC work is, if it has a Copeland compressor then you are getting quality.
Then the other factors are proper sizing of equipment, proper sizing of duct work, and trained/skilled installation technicians.
But if you see a Bristol compressor, keep searching, because I have had to replace more failed Bristol compressors than anything else.
Payne, Bryant, and GrandAire are all Carrier. Just with different labels. AmeriStar, American Standard are Trane, and Coleman is made by York. (and they use Bristol compressors)
So if you want to spend up to 3 times the cost and more for the Trane/Carrier/York...go ahead! But I can assure you that the 2.5 ton condensing unit which if a Trane will cost me $2,300, the AmeriStar will cost me $650 plus tax.
And as far as the Goodman goes...they are going to be just as reliable as the Trane, they use the Copeland compressors.

Absolutely a no brainer for me. I have serviced both for 15 years. Get the Trane. No reason to go fancy on the Trane. Stick with the TTB models. They are the lowest cost in the Trane line and just as reliable.

forget Goodman, they are the brand of no-name dealers. Goodman is the brand of choice for trailer houses. they are junk. in fact they are so bad, that any one can buy them (EPA certified anyway) you dont have to be a reputable businessman to sell Goodman, they are sold over the counter by HVAC supply houses.
