I love BOTH!!! Im 28 and live in Scotland, UK and for the past 4 years my boyfriend and I have spent our 3 week vacation staying in San Francisco and driven down to San Diego. The road trip is fabulous, and i always find masses to do in both cities. It is true San Diego is warmer, but both have great climate (especially compared to the unpredictable Scottish summers) Id say the San Francisco attractions can be done repeatedly year after year, while i would not want to go to the likes of sea world more then once. Both have fantastic restaurants and bars and both are supper friendly. My only dilemma is knowing which Baseball team to support while im there. I love, love, love them both!! But at 17 you would probably do better in San Diego, i suppose, as drinking is out of the question.

I heard of 2 seniors who "wanted to see the whole country" by bus and they later swore that they'd never do that again. Way too tiring and the same old interstate fast food places. May I suggest that you spend your time exploring San Francisco, renting a car and visiting Marin county, driving along the Pacific coast, etc. You could also spend some time visiting LA, Solvang (a Danish village), San Diego, etc. Air fares are cheap this time of year so you could fly between the cities of California.

If you can find a bus that goes down Pacific Coast Highway, take it! If you can't find a bus, rent a car that you can return in San Diego; it will be worth the expense.

The Amtrak route can be scenic but Amtrak "service" is unreliable and their food prices are outrageous.

Rent a Car and go South on the Coast Highway. When you get to Carmel, stay at Quail Lodge.

Yeah. Take the train.
If you drive, take the 101 south to LA, then take 5 south to San Diego.

How about Amtrack, you can get the feeling of being on a train.
Make it an adventure and get off and stay at hotels on the way.
