Nothing and Nobody in the history of the world has changed the world as much as Christopher Columbus.
His four voyages to the "New World" between 1492 and 1502 changed the world economically, culturally, scientifically..
Even the vegetables / fruit you are eating today.. farming methods...
Politically raising questions about slavery.. religion...treatment of the "Indians / savages / humans? / animals?
Spain soon became the most powerful AND the most openminded nation at that time. New ideas about democracy and freedom arose.
This answer is getting too long for most people. I encourage you to read some books by SAMUEL MORRISON on Columbus, and LEWIS HANKS, on the developments in the NEW and OLD worlds after the discoveries of Columbus.
And Friar Bartholome de las Casas, about treatment of fellow human beings, the REAL role of religion in our life, and the role of Kings in the world.

Here are some of the things he said himself:
At a very early age I began to sail upon the ocean. For more than forty years, I have sailed everywhere that people go. I prayerd to the most merciful Lord about my heart's great desire, and He gave me the spirit and the intelligence for the task: seafaring, astronomy, geometry, arithmetic, skill in drafting spherical maps and placing correctly the cities, rivers, mountains and ports. I also studied cosmology, history, chronology and philosophy.
It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel His hand upon me) the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was form the Holy Spirit,...
I spent seven years in the royal court, discussing the matter with many persons of gret reputation and wisdom in all the arts; and in the end they concluded that it was all foolishness, so they gave it up.
... No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Savior, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. The working out of all things has been assigned to each person by our Lord, but it all happens according to His sovereign will even though He gives advice.
....The fact that the gospel must still be preached to so many lands in such a short time, this is what convinces me.
from a translation of Libro de las profecias (Book of Prophecies)

I can tell you it's not sure wether he really discovered America.
Some people think it was an Italian named Amerigo Vespucci.
He also had three boats: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
I believe he was portugese, but sailed for Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain. The island of St. Bart's is named for his brother, Bartolomeo Columbus.

If we value the pursuit of knowledge, we must be free to follow where ever that search may lead us. The free mind is not a barking dog, to be tethered on a 10- foot chain.
