Darcy is a major character in Pride and Prejudice. He is the person in the book that Elizabeth's thoughts and feelings revolve around. His supposed past actions are what make Elizabeth feel the way she feels toward him in the beginning and then she gradually learns differently about him and comes to know him in a different light. The entire book revolves around Elizabeth's coming to know Darcy as he truly is and not as he has been portrayed to her.
I think Jane is also a major character because of her relationship with Bingley who is Mr. Darcy's best friend. Jane's feelings about losing Mr. Bingley contribute to shaping Elizabeth's attitude toward Darcy. Also Jane is the person who tries to encourage Elizabeth to see the good in Darcy even before Elizabeth herself is willing to admit that he may not be such a bad guy after all. She's not as major a character as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy but I think she is very important to the storyline.

Darcy is not a minor character. The book revolves around the pride and prejudice of both Elizabeth and Darcy.

Darcy is the hero to Elizabeth's heroine. That's never minor!
Minor characters tend to be involved in a story's subplots. Think of minor characters as the ones who, if they were removed from the story, would not hugely interfere with the main story arc. Minor characters in P and P would be Charlotte, Georgiana, Mr. Collins, and Bingley's sisters. They help to advance the plot, but could easily be replaced by other situational characters without interfering with the Elizabeth/Darcy story arc.

he is definitely a major character .As parker puts it minor characters if removed from the story dont alter it much. u try removing Darcy & u r left with the cover of the buk. just a correction to what most people think ..........P&P is about the pride & the prejudice of both the characters & not lizzie's prejudice & darcy's pride. isnt all the preconcieved notions that darcy has (though dissolved in his pride) about lizzie-- prejudice,,, and is it not lizzie's pride that is hurt when darcy ignores her!!!!

I think he's major. He's equal to Elizabeth in intelligence, prejudice, heart and virtue. He has to go through a change just as she does so Austen must have considered him a dynamic character.

he is definitely a major character since elizabeth's feelings, thoughts.emotions are all related to him...through her feeling of distaste towards him when he snubbed lizzy at the dance the author shows elizabeth's prejudice...again it is through the change of his character that lizzy learns to swallow her foolish pride and silly prejudice...and ultimately its darcy's letter which changes her outlook...he's definitely a protagonist....

No. Both Darcey and Elizabeth are the central characters in Austen's novel. He of course is 'Pride' and she 'Prejudice'.
