Sure. However, if it is dual channel, you will not get the benefit of added speed due to the fact that the dual channel advantage is not being used. However you will see a speed increase from the extra memory as your system has more room to run programs and no longer has to move temporary info to your hard drive; it will now just be moved back and forth through the RAM. Furthermore, you can even use different speeds of RAM; your computer will just slow the faster stick down to match the slower one.

it depends on if the 2 ports are dual-channel or not. Somewhere in your computer's specs it should list if the momory slots are dual-channel. If they are dual-channel slots, then the SAME AMOUNT of memory must be in each slot. If they are not, then you can use different memory in each slot.

in typical cases you can.
but in p3 systems 512 is the max memory.
in p4 its 2gb in this case u can.
the best guide will be your motherboard manual to refer the max memory.
but you can place 256 in one slot and 1gb in other
