My heaven. Successful people already PAY MORE because we make more. We also pay more property taxes and sales taxes to add to our income tax.
WHY should we be taxed at 30 some % and other people are only taxed in the teens?

A FLAT tax is fair.

I AM open minded. I just have VERY strong opinions. There are liberals on this site whose opinions I respect and value a lot. Is that a surprise to you Dead Fox?

BTW - for those of you who report me - I do not report - I debate and yes ...argue!

I love the idea of a flat tax. Jerry Brown made that his major campaign proposal in 1992 when running for president. Did you vote for him? I didn't think so. (I did)

There have been a couple of "flat tax" ideas floated around in recent years, but the most "do-able", I feel, was conceived by Milton Friedman in 1962 (Capitalism and Freedom)- the NIT or Negative Income Tax. It is essentially a flat tax with deductions - $20,000 per adult and $7,000 per dependent. A family of 4 earning $54,000 would owe no tax, everything over $54K would be taxed at 20%.

The problem with most flat tax proposals is that none take into consideration unearned income (capital gains, interest and dividends), things from which the rich are far more likely to benefit than the poor.

Another consideration is that the wealthy, by and large, consume a much greater amount of our national resources (water, land, oil, etc.) and contribute to the national trade deficit at a greater rate than the poor.

The most "fair" solution is a flat tax with deductions on ALL income (earned and unearned) coupled with either a national sales tax, higher tariffs, or VAT (similar to the UK).

Of course, all of these proposals would decrease government income, so a fiscally conservative government is key to their success. Otherwise, we look at exploding national debt, a devalued dollar, and higher interest rates.

It's nice to find something we can agree on...

As an aside, you are not in the top tax bracket unless you make 7 figures.

Actually more rich and succesful people hire accountants who help them find loopholes and ways around paying the taxes that they should. When they are really rich they set up trusts so the money can't ever be taxed and they can live off of it. Another common trick is to buy a ranch and pretend that they are cowboys (Reagan, Sam Donaldson, Bush, Ted Turner) that way they actually get subsidies and don't pay taxes at all. But the little people don't have access to these tricks and actually pay their taxes in full.

To reduce the everwidening gap between the haves and the havenots.

Thanks to Cheney White House policies, the Middle Class is being eliminated from this country. If that happens, there will be dire economic results.

I love it... first of all, you aren't the Rich that are benefiting from the current administration... you are part of the upper bottom 50% that think they're the top 3%.. unless you cleared a couple of mill last year you aren't even in the ball park.. so put away your check book and your displaced froth.. and go work harder we grow tired of your laziness... blast you and your 30%.

I think a flat tax would be fine.. but that's not the liberals that are preventing that, lest we forget that the last 9 years has had a dramatic affect on the middle class which is what you are.. the boys at the top are laughing all the way to the bank.. and they aint Libs...

dig it, the guy below me hit it right on the head... you tell me to be moral... what is moral dear?..

I agree that there should be a flat tax. Why is it the more you make the more they take. Maybe we should just get on welfare and live for free . NOT

The Dems are planning a middle class tax cut so I imagine you'll receive some benefits from that unless you are the top 2 percent of earners. First, the rich are now paying a smaller percentage of their income in taxes than at any time in the last seventy-five years. That they pay a lot of taxes nonetheless is a by-product of the mind-boggling increase in their income and wealth relative to most other Americans. Second, if you consider not just income and capital-gains taxes but all the taxes people pay -- including payroll taxes and sales taxes -- you find that middle-income workers are now paying a larger share of their incomes than people at or near the top. We have turned the principle of a graduated, progressive tax on its head. Remember, Warrren Buffet also said the rich should be paying more taxes.

I believe if you paid the taxes you should benefit from the tax cut. That's fair. I also believe that when a person has more than another, they should share. Rich people have a responsibility to people less fortunate than them. As far as the drama surrounding it, I don't care. I'm middle class and I liked the tax cut. Enjoy the back and forth. :o)

Most of the rich and filthy rich have so many tax shelters its ridiculous and the tax code is riddled with loopholes. They take advantage of every one of them. I probably pay more in a year than a lot of people making over $250,000 a year and I don't make anywhere near that. You shouldn't complain. In Britain, they'll take about 90% or more of what you make if you make the big bucks. We should have a national sales tax - that way the rich can't get around paying it.

I have no problem whatsoever with what you owe/pay in taxes. My issue is with those who make so much that they can afford to employ accountants and lawyers to find every possible loophole to get them OUT of paying taxes.

There should be sufficient examples of this to prove my point.

I agree with you.
If you are rich, and you have worked hard through an educational program, earned your degree, obtained a good position and excelled in your career, you should be rewarded, not punished.
Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is, the poor are barely getting by, and the middle class, are beconming poorer by the day.
So what is the solution?
Secure our borders, cut welfare costs, deport the illegals, especailly those who come into our country to commit crimes, and see what's left in the Democratic piggy bank for the rest of us.
