The main conflict is the relationship between Miss Daisy and her black driver. In the beginning she looked at him as no more than a servant (less than a servant because he was black) and as the story progresses they not only become friends, they become close companions. the conflict is the relationship between a rich southern white woman and her black uneducated servant. The story (I believe) takes a turn for the better when he confides in her that he can't read. She then teaches him how to read in a very simple and easy to understand way. He actually gave her a purpose in life and she gave him dignity. The conflicts lies in the differences between the two.

There is a lot more to the book than just the fact that he took some salmon. I have never read that book but I have watched the movie a few times and It seems to me that the main conflict of the story is really about prejudices between whites and blacks going through the late 50's and 60's. It is about the old lady thinking about black people not as people but as possessions really. As the story goes on she comes to understand that even though she was always nice to the "help" she never really thought of them as people. In the end she forms a very special friendship with her driver and he even visits her in the old folks home and what not. I don't know if that's the main conflict but I believe it to be.

I've only seen the movie. Isn't the conflict that she is sticking with old fashioned views and judging him because he is black and a "servant", even though he does more for her as a friend than anyone else she knows?

What about the conflict between Miss Daisy and her black chauffeur. She didn`t trust him because he was black.

Could be the time period when racism was alive and well. Maybe the subtle tension between the two protagonists?
