i have a box turtle that sleeps with its head extended all the way out of its shell. can i put anything in the tank to make it soft where she sleeps?

This sounds unusual. I'd double check basic cares at sites like http://www.boxturtle.info or http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

You can try a thick layer of a mix of sand, loam/mulch, and shredded barks to make a soft layer the turtle can dig into, and that will hold humidity (if it is an Eastern box).

It might also be a matter of too high of temps- temps should run 75-85F.

Sleeping with her neck stretched out could be a sign of respritory infection, might want to get that looked at. If you want to line her cage with sphagnum moss or something along that line that would probably be ok. Just be watchful of mites.

No, I just let mine sleep any way she wants to. I put a green mat in her tank, and a piece of cork to climb on.
