Excel at something. Michelle is right. All those applicants have amazing stats and do tons of extra currics. So, the only way to get in is to catch their attention somehow. It can be really standing out in some activity, an amazing letter of rec (try an English teacher, they tend to have great writing skills), or an amazing essay.
Berkeley is easier if you have top grades and scores but don't stand out otherwise.

You have to stand out above others that are applying and standing out is quite difficult. Realize that most people applying have a 4.0 GPA, great test scores, are involved in many extra curricular activities, and are frequently top of their class. If you are like this too you are just like the thousands of other Stanford applicants. You need to shine in another ways. Your personal essay and the recommendations your teachers write is an excellent place to share something unique about yourself. Focus on community involvement, your passions, or your unique background. Stanford wants smart people, but they also want individuals that bring diversity and unique skills/passions to campus.
I got into Stanford with excellent grades but just average test scores (for Stanford. 1400 SAT, 32 ACT). I think my essay and my non-standard extra curricular activities made me shine.

I applied to Stanford early action this year. I have a best combined SAT score of 2200, ACT score of 34, GPA of 4.95 and currently three 5's on AP tests. I'm also actively involved in plenty of things, and I thought my essays were pretty good. However, everyone who applies to Stanford has at least my scores and just as many activities and creative essays. Its highly depressing. Maybe you have what they're looking for, but after a "thorough evaluation of my application" I apparently did not have what it takes to even be deferred. This was after they told me how strong an applicant I was. I'm sorry. I'm kind of venting here. Basically, I'd say it's next to impossible, but if thats what you want then go for it. I knew my chances were slim, but at least I can say I tried.
