we've been trying to conceive, and have checked my cervical mucous and i know what my cervix feels like, but can you actually feel it with your fingers when it is open? I can feel the indention, but have never felt it open.

It opens when you are dilated, like when in labor. As far as I know, it does not really open before then although it does expand slightly when you orgasm. That is why my doc told me that we should make sure I do that every time while we were trying to conceive. The first two pregnancies took 2.5 years and 17 months to conceive, the last one 1 month post miscarriage took only 1 month to conceive. The doc says it makes your cervix move lower and open very slightly, allowing better access for the little swimmers and also your body produces a very semen friendly discharge that helps them remain alive for the longest amount of time after ejaculation! Yes, it just doesn't open very much.

However I only started checking after I had had a baby, so it might be different if you haven't had any.
