Hey all. I need some help. I want to teach someone who is 19 years of age (basically an adult) how to write. They passed high school and everything(barely), but they can't seem to write even 1 sentence without it having at least 2 errors. I can't be with them at the moment because they are in another state and at a different college than I am, but I really want to help them... Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to teach them or what advice I can give them? They are really struggling and even after I correct their mistakes, they will make them over and over again.

Even the word "example" they spell incorrectly...

So, I need some advice on what to do. Thanks.

You really need to identify the patterns in their errors. Is it always spelling errors? Could the mistakes be caused by typing incorrectly, mis-understanding vowel sounds or getting letters like "b" and "d" confused? Are there grammar errors indicating this person doesn't understand tenses, articles, pronouns or subject-verb agreement? Is this person able to print and write in cursive legibly? Can the person read aloud fluently? You need to understand the root of the problem before you try to solve it.

I teach writing at the college level. I give my students these words of wisdom.
1. Learn and Use Grammar and Spelling Check.
2. The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill has a wonderful website that has grammar handouts on it for every subject under the sun. USE IT.
3. Get someone to edit your work before you hand it in.
4. Read your work carefully starting with your last sentence. That way you are reading your sentences and your mind isnt filling in the rest .
5. www.sparknotes.com can help with English Composition and Literature.
6. www.citationmachine.net will help you write citations for academic writing.
7. If you are having trouble with term papers , research papers etc. and you have some money to spend, look at style ease , which helps you format your papers and insert correct citations
