Bobby Orr paved the way for the offensive minded defensemen of the NHL today. He was one of the first to really bring offense to the position. He won the Art Ross trophy for the League scoring championship twice (1970, 1975), becoming the only defenseman to ever to win the award. He also won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman eight consecutive times and also won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player three times. Also, he scored both game winning goals to win the Bruins championships. During those runs he earned the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP both times.
So, without Bobby Orr, Al MacInnis probably wouldn't have played the game the way he did. In conclusion, Al MacInnis was great, but no the best ever.

Al MacInnis, Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Brian Leetch, Phil Housley, and Larry Murphy all performed for the time of the intense scoring era of the 1980's, that is annoying for defensemen to attain at that fee now. Paul Coffey had 5 a hundred plus element seasons, and Brian Leetch replaced into the final defenseman to suitable a hundred factors in a season, and that replaced into 2 many years in the past. i'm unsure if a defenseman interior the present era might desire to experience what they did, given the emphasis located on protection interior the game.

AL McInnis was one of the best d'men ever, but not the greatest. I think you will agree with me that he had one of the best slap shots and highest plus minus.
However, I think the best d'man ever was Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins. I was born and raised in Boston and followed the Bruins closely including Bobby Orr's career. He could skate rings around most other players, had a hard, accurate slap shot and had a number of record years.
I think Macinnis, Chris Pronger and Scott Neidermeyer are close seconds. But that's just my opinion!

he could be easily in the top 10 list of best defence
Eddie Shore
Bobby Orr
Serge Savard
Larry Robinson
Denis Potvin
Ray Bourque
Paul Coffey
Al MacInnis
Scott Stevens
Chris Pronger
Scott Neidermayer
and the list can go on, allot of people think of just his slap shot, and his offencive ability, but he was great playing in his own end and he was racking up the minutes come playoff time great player surly will be missed.
