Depends where n NY... some places are cheap there to live so 85,000 would be alot. Cali seems to be very high wherever you live.

$85,000 in Manhattan will go further than the $100 in cal. You could live a nice lifestyle in the big apple on that amount of money- no car insurance, no car payment only rent and subways are cheap- buses are even less. You can't beat the night life if you're single and unless you have children, (private school is mucho $$$ in nyc) and believe me, you would want private schools for your children, NYC is super- I was just there last week- before new years - I only live 2 hours from the city and I love going there- there is so much to do and there are so many restaurants that are really really reasonable..

If you are going to live AND work in Santa Monica, you should be able to walk, bike or take a bus. The car may not be necessary. It's just if you're going to go from LA city to LA city (it's, like, 30 cities but it's all LA) that you have to drive.

Depends on your personality type. If you're super laid-back, cool and casual, go CA. If you're sophisticated and formal, go NY. Go where you think you will be happy and you'll find a way to pay the bills. I know people who live on $20,000 in both places.

(I should add a disclaimer--I LOVE Santa Monica.)

P.S. You have a really nice problem. It's a problem, but it's two great choices.

Stay in Cali. Cali is on the leading edge of technology. You would be the first to know a ton of new things before NY even knew it existed.
You must be in the IT field. =o) Good luck.

I'd take the $85k in NYC anyday. Cost of living is high in both areas, but I don't like the constant heat of Cali. I prefer the diversity of NY, weather and people.

I've lived in both cities. Decide where you want to live. You'll be pulling a nice salary in either case. Which firm do you prefer?
Don't make the money a deciding factor.

I think I would choose Cali.
Warm weather. Own Car. Not as crowded. Cheaper. Too many perks.

New York is better.

It's a lot more expensive but your chances of dying in your bed are a lot better.

California is one of the most dangerous places on Earth.

Sooner or later you will get shot.
