Have you ever heard a song, and it made you feel incredibly sad, even though the song might not have been a sad song?
or

Have you ever heard a song and you just became overwhelmed with happiness, not because it was a happy song...or for the melody, but because as soon as the singer sang the first few words, you felt an instant calmness, and tranquility? If you have, to any of these two experiences, can you tell me about it? Thanks!

Music has always been powerful in my life. The way that it can rip an emotion out of the depths and bring it to the surface is amazing. It can be a song about nothing, with no words even and I can feel everything that the writter must have been feeling when they wrote or played the song. Sometimes when I'm driving I just put the music on and let it take me away and it just releases my emotions and lets me feel.

I've experienced both. I personally associate memories with songs. Whatever I was doing when I first heard a song is what I think of whenever I hear the song again. Like when I got dumped by my first boyfriend and there was a certain song on the radio. Or when my fiance took me out for the first time and there was a song playing. Stuff like that. Sometimes it's totally random. But yes, music has a huge effect on me and totally brings back memories whenever I hear certain songs, no matter what the song's content....happy, sad, mad, etc. What matters more is what I was feeling when I heard it.

I had this experience with an R.E.M. song called "Day Sleeper" The minute I heard the song, it sounded like the singer knew exactly what it is like to work at night (the 11pm to 7am shift). It was one of those rare occasions when I felt like Michael Stipe wrote the song from something that I had experienced.

The song that affects me the most is "Holes in the Floor of Heaven". I think of my Dad. He wasn't here to see me get married or my daughters born.
