It seems that there are people who have a natural instinct to protect others who are less fortunate than themselves. So, who protects these people?

Aside from the protectors which work together as teams for instance police men, fire men and soldiers which often take care of there own , some protectors are loners who take on the task of helping others by their selves . These self less individuals often have no one to protect them when needed . Fortunately a great many are very resourceful and go about helping others while maintaining things reasonably well for themselves also .
There is another side to the coin and some generous people give more than they are really can and suffer some consequences as a result of their giving and helping nature . I've seen some such people taken advantage of by various charity organizations or supposed ones , my own mother fell into this category.
This happened as she was getting up in years and she began donating to various charity organizations , some valid and some I later found to be obvious con scams when I began helping her with her affairs and discovered she had spent her entire savings giving to any charity which contacted her . She began to feel obligated to each and everyone , legitimate for not and would send money to all . I as her son had to take control because she could not pay her own bills , she was giving so much. Some actually had the audacity once she began donating to demand more donations , I read the letters myself . They would promise a chance to win a sweepstakes for a donation or something similar.
Fortunately I was around to step in and take care of her business and put a stop to the unethical donation seekers that I seen she had encountered . Several I turned into the State Attorney Generals office and had them investigated and they were cooperative and helpful . What I’m getting at is their are many Protectors and helpful people who don't have family they see often or if any at all and they are often victimized , taken advantage of and have no protector to step in for them . That’s a rather sad picture but it happens much more than most realize I'm sure of it .

Often no one. Someone who habitually protects others drains their own reserves and unless they know how to decompress they eventually break...
Being overly aware of danger is also a symptom of many mental health issues such as post traumatic stress.

Interesting question. I believe a loved one's support lends energy for the protector to protect them self and their loved ones. Whether married, a parent, or a soldier, support is often under appreciated and always needed.
