You ram is too less for games these days. I would have atleast 512MB to eliminate that variable out of this problem. You don't need 2GB just for game to work. The OS will use virtual memory. However with 512MB one cannot guarantee speed.
First things first, to see if the game works.

Best way, is to search for that game on the internet, or if you bought it at a store, look at the box and see the hardware & OS requirements. It will tell you all about the min cpu, memory, os requirements.

After that, try to work with the other issue (if any shows up)

You need to uninstall your old video card drivers and restart your system. After doing this go to NVIDIAs website and download the appropriate drivers for your Geforce FX 5200. You will find them here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.htm assuming your on Windows XP. Also you need to update Direct X on your system. Direct X facilitates coding language between your video card and the Windows environment. The installer packages are here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx

And to answer your question if 256mb of ddr ram is good enough I would have to say no. 512mb is the bare minimum. Frame rates in current games will be horrible if the game will run at all.

Check specifically the model / mfg number printed on your motherboard. Then goto the net and research the maximum to fully populate your RAM. Then streamline your : "MSconfig" to absolutely the minumum to boot with , not to put strain on the computer's resources. Upgrade to a highest capacity video card, they most that the motherboard will support. Perform computer diagnostics / maintenance on regular basis. (Weekly)
Good luck.

I would definitely upgrade the memory to AT LEAST 512MB, 1GB is better. The BSOD could be caused by a number of things, try updating the videocard drivers first.

I agree with Jonathan D. You DEFINITELY need more than 256mb of RAM in your machine. Like he said, upgrade at LEAST to 512mb and preferably to 1gb.

I assume you are running WindowsXP. Is that correct?

Good luck.

depends on what games your playing and what operating system, and a bunch of other factors but like others mentioned, I would defiantly go with a gig of ram, ram will make the games run smoother

256 MB of system ram is NOT enough.

I suggest at least 2GB since you are playing games.

Example I have 1GB, and when my oblivion game freezes, and I go into task manager , i see the game using close to 700MB of ram.

256MB isn't enough neither is your FX5200 for most games.
