A patent is obtained by filing a written application at the relevant patent office. if you mean an invention then what you need to do is contact the Patent Office. you need to register your invention and thereby assure yourself of whatever benefits may come from the use or the sale of the invention. my daddy just thought of a brilliant invention and plans on contacting them soon as well. dont put it off though. people think of new things every day. sometimes they steal somebodys. make sure you dont get drunk or something and start running your mouth off to someone. my uncle invented something and instead of rushing to the patent office he waited and then someone stole it so be careful. hope it works out for you.

Put the idea down on paper, with as much information as possible, perhaps including diagrams, if appropriate. Send it to yourself and obtain a certificate of posting.
