I'd say someone who is homeless would know about struggles as it was their soul mate. A homeless person's only companion in life may be their daily struggles.....
a soul mate is someone who is meant to be, I'd imagine some homeless people think that they cannot rise out of their situation so that is the way it is meant to be for them.....

It's a poor sentence that mixes plurals with singulars. Should be "I know about struggles as if they were my soul mate" or "I know about struggle as if it were my soul mate." The meaning is clear and needs no explanation.

There are many synonyms to struggles that would have made the sentence convey more feeling and be more comprehensible.
Example; I know of life's challenges, as if they were my soul mates.

Your soul mate is someone who is so close to you that once you meet your soul mate, you're drawn together (or connected) b/c they're 100% compatible with your soul. Your most inner being.

Saying that struggles are your soul mate, means that your life is a struggle. Struggles happen so much in your life as if they're unavoidable b/c they happen to you as close as your soul is to you.

I hope I've made sense.
