The best thing you can do right now is write. Start writing, keep writing and don't stop writing. If your high school has a newspaper, try out for it and get involved. If your high school offers creative writing or publication writing as an elective, take it. If they don't, write on your own time.

News writing is different from fiction writing: your goal is to give your reader as much information in as few words as possible. Start thinking about writing clearly and concisely, not writing to overwhelm your reader with flowery language.

The other best thing is to read. Read the newspaper in the morning or when you get home from school. Set the home page on your computer to a website that has a news feed on it so that you can read any headlines that catch your eye.

I'm a fourth year journalism student in the US, so I can't say much about Canadian schools. I can tell you that in my own experience, keeping up with current events and reading what's being printed every day is the best way to improve your writing skills. I can also tell you that going to a school just because it has a really good program you like isn't always the best reason to go to a school. That's a whole nother matter, though, and you have plenty of time to find the right school for you.

Other than that, just find a good university with a good journalism program, and keep reading the news.
