Because mainstream American white people weren't accepting of rap music when Vanilla Ice came on the scene in 1990; back then white kids were listening to rock and alternative. There were white rappers; Beastie Boys, MC Serch and a few others but their audience was mainly black and puerto ricans. It doesn't have anything to do with Eminem's talent, he just happened to come along when the time was right for a mainstream white rapper. Dr. Dre was a visionary and saw huge $ signs when he took Marshal Mathers and turned him into Eminem...

The timing is everything.

Back when Vanilla Ice came out, the white audience was listening to Heavy Metal and starting to get into the Seattle Grunge scene.

When Eminem came out, rap was the music of choice to drive parents up the wall.

Vanilla Ice - I would never go to the place vanilla ice grew up. Too many shootings and robberies there for me... although it is a suburb.

Eminem grew up in the projects of detroit, also not the nicest place to grow up.

Eminem would be some wanksta white boy, slingin' crack rocks and meth right now if it weren't for the collaboration with Dr Dre. Eminem is a product of Dre.

Vanilla Ice had no formal collaboration with a pioneer of the rap/hiphop genre - the format was too new.

Eminem is a good rapper, and Vanilla Ice was a clown. He pretended to be from the "streets" and was really from the suburbs. Eminem really is from a rough part of Detroit.

Bah. Eminem blows as much as Vanilla Ice imo. Everything sounds alike, slim this and that. Just that he made it in the "right" period of time, with all this commercial gangster style going on.

Take one look at their lyrics; Eminem has an ease with words, meter and phrasing that Vanilla Ice totally lacked. Eminem has a lot more talent and is a lot more adept at his art.

The real reason for Slim's longevity is, and everyone will agree, he's an extremely intelligent individual. Keep it real, he makes moves like a genius. He knows how to test the waters and he knows what the world wants. If you piss the right people off, the right people will buy ur records. The rap game is like a chess game and Slim is a master. Str8 up.
