I assume they don't poison them, since that would likely be a problem for the snakes that eat them. Starving them would be inhumane and would also make them a pretty poor meal. So, how do they do it?

Wow, so many wrong answers.

Freezing an animal to death is actually a very painful process and is looked down upon. Professional rodent suppliers will euthanize the animals using Carbon Dioxide. In small quantities it has an anesthetic quality and puts them to sleep eventually depriving them of oxygen and killing them. Cervical dislocation (breaking the neck) is also another approved method as it is very quick and painless, however it is not used that often because it has to be performed individually.

Definitely make sure the food is at room temperature. As a note for people who advise to only feed live food-there are a lot of herp vets and breeders that say that live food is extremely dangerous to feed a snake that is not in the wild as there is a very high chance of the snake getting injured-especially if a tooth or claw hit the snake's eye. Captive kept reptiles often don't quite have the skills or reaction time that the same animal would if it was in the wild. By the way-I REALLY liked the suggestion that "Chris and Lisa" made. It would definitely get the snake's attention and trigger its appetite without any actual risk to the snake beyond hitting the tongs. I've never actually heard that before and I wish I already had enough points to give them a thumbs up.

They are flash-frozen. Exposed to extreme cold combined with a total lack of oxygen under high pressure. They suffocate instantly and are as stiff as boards within seconds. It might not be painless but it isn't inhumane. They aren't tortured. If they feel anything, it is only momentary.

Short and sweet. Usually bashed over the head and put in the freezer in my experience.

i heard they grab them by the head, swing them around, and break their necks, or in the case of babies, just pop them in the freezer
