The language you speak can effect the way you think, it can also limit or help your ability to communicate. For example some languages are better at expressing feelings some are specialized to the culture like Native Alaskans having over 50 words for snow. Concepts and stories in some religions and philosophy's barely if do not translate at all from one language to another. So I think it is very important to preserve the ones we have. Culturally and practically.
If only one, I would choose Sign Language. Its fare to everyone because its no ones own, and helps the deaf too. Then use Esperanto (a real "new one developed by some research team"I think in the 60s) for things like airports, trade, international writing and the blind.
But only if we still also spoke our native tongues.

it unfortunately seems that english is becoming the global language. i think it would be wonderful if mulitple modern languages were built into one (maybe forgoing dialects because that would be much harder to incorporate)
maybe it should be latin. then we'll ALL have to learn it.
