I live in a pretty good sized city and I see signs that say things similar to that all of the time. When I first moved here I would always stop and give them about everything I had on me at that time. Then I saw a few of those people asking for money for food in the liquor store buying beer after I gave them money. So, what I do now, if I see someone holding a sign or waiting in front of a store asking for money for food, I tell them come with me and I'll buy you some grocery's (I always keep the receipt, so they can't return them for money) or I'll go and buy you something from a restaurant. You have no idea how many of those people have turned me down cause they are wanting the money for alcohol or drugs. But they are a few that have taken me up on it and I'll buy them around $25-50 worth of food.

buy the man a .99 cent burger a can of soda for the dog a can of dog food and a bottle of water and give the guy the left over change.

1st I would smile, if he smiled back then I would go get him and the dog food and drinks. I would also stick around to make sure he fed the dog, if he dont eat thats ok he is a grown man, but a animal is helpless. If he ate also I would give him any change I had left, and I would like to ask him how he got in this situation he is now in? I know alot of people who do this r con artist but I know there r really poor and mentally ill people as well in this country who have nothing, I would have to find out and hope he would tell the truth.

In Oregon pan handlers have been known to make 500 a day by pulling on peoples heart strings.
I used to pull over and offer them an honest job doing farm work, And cash at the end of the day. You would not believe the things I heard, and had thrown at me.
I have seen some of them walk two blocks and get into brand new pickup trucks. Viet Nam Vet my skinny white A-- , I saw a man holding one of the signs saying Nam Vet while wearing a pair of my dads old BDU's I know cause mom called me up and asked if I wanted them, she gave them to goodwill, They still had a patches on them Unique to my family. and The panhandler had a story for each one of them.
Try giving them food, real food sometime.
Most just want cash put in their hand.

I would go to the store and buy the dog some food and the man some food, then go back and give it to them. If they really needed the food then they would be grateful for it.

I once watched 60 minutes type show about panhandlers and it's been said that some of them make more than the average working man. Alot of them (not all) are just schemers still I try and help out when I can (especially if they have pets) I'd rather give money to a schemer than not help out someone truly in need. Things happen in life and any one of us could wind up in a position of need.

Go buy him the dog food and the burger then give it to him. One thing I know about beggers ... if they're really in need of just food, they'll be happy, if they're the con artists they'll throw the food back in your face

Give him all 5 bucks and wish I had more... then look for him another time to give more... I have 2 dogs and usualy have treats or food or toys in the car... i would give one to the doggie...

Give the money to a homeless shelter as the guy is either a junkie playng on your dharma or a con man.
