Lincoln and Douglas mainly debated on the issue of slavery, Breckenridge, and Bell on state rights. Lincoln won the election with 39% of the popular vote overall. Lincoln won in 17 free states and zero slave states, with 180 electoral votes, Breckenridge won in 11 slave states and zero free states, with 72 electoral votes, Bell received 39 electoral votes, and Douglas received 12 electoral votes.
