What religions were Reuven and Danny in the book The Chosen?

I know they were both Jews, but were they different kinds of jews? or what?

I haven't read this book in quite a while, but I believe that Danny was a Hasidic Jew and Reuven was a modern Orthodox. This is what the article on Wikipedia states (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chosen_%28Chaim_Potok%29#Characters_in_.22The_Chosen.22). This fits what I remember about the book.
