I had a movie saved on my hardrive that i tried to copy to dvd, the file was too big, so i selected the compress files to save disk space option. the window didnt appear to be doing anything so i x ed out. The end now program popped up, so i hit end now. Now, my task bar has diappeared, so have my desktop icons. I hit the power button but it just hibernated my computer. I have an hp laptop running windows and i have no idea how to fix this.

Well....it isn't uncommon for almost all software to crash occasionally. Your burn software crashed and caused your system to 'hang'. Sounds like you tried to 'cold boot' your system by hitting the power button. Some systems like HP and Compaq, and Gateway have cold boot protection switches to prevent people from doing just that.
While cold booting isn't the healthiest thing for your computer's operating system and file system, sometimes its the only way to get a restart. To do this hold down the power button for at least ten seconds. I also recommend doing a checkdisk at next boot-up to check for file system errors every time you've had to do a cold boot like that. Good luck to you.

Does ctrl+alt+delte bring up the normal windows Task Manager? If so, go to "shutdown" at top and turn it off. Otherwise you could hard-boot it. Normally if you press and HOLD the power button for like 5 seconds, the computer will just shutoff. Hopefully everything comes back up when you restart. Also, even if your desktop icons/taskbar have dissapeared, sometimes you can hit the "Windows" key on your keyboard and bring up your start menu and shutdown from there. Either way, I'd try to restart it...and hope everything works when you bring it back up.

u can try opening up your task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+delete, click open the file menu and then run. type in explorer in the open bar and hit enter. the windows shell should pop back up. if not its best to do a manual shut down and and boot up, just hold the power button for about 5-10 seconds, that will shut down your computer.

Try holding down the power button this time. Or press Ctrl-Alt-Del which will bring up the task manager and run Explorer.exe

Reboot (turn off completely). If you turn on the computer and it says "Resuming Windows", hit F8 and select restart.

On a Mac, shift/administration/3 takes a image of the reveal screen. in case you press shift/administration/4, you are able to click and drag over the area you pick; the picture is taken once you launch the mouse button.

reboot, but you probably lost your movie. the program wasn't responding or the end now dialog box wouldn't have popped up.
