I bought some jasmine vines to plant soon, but upon investigation, I found out that they are fatally poisonous to dogs (and other animals). I also bought a grape vine, and grapes are poisonous to dogs as well.

So I was wondering, what would be safe?

And what's the best way to have both a garden and a dog? She's mainly an indoor dog (a boxer/shepherd mix). I want to plant flowers and possibly fruits and veggies too.

Ideas? What kind of plants do you have around your dogs?

That's unfortunate, I would like to plant jasmine also but will eventually get a dog. Maybe you can plant those where the dog won't go, like the front yard or side yard fenced from the dog. Otherwise I would look up on the internet what grows locally for you and is dog-friendly.

Here is a list I found online of pet toxic plants, it was on the ASPCA site.

Here is where I found the link to the list, it's an article about keeping your yard pet-friendly.

Looking further on the ASPCA site, jasmine was on the list on Non-toxic Plants, this is the description, "This list contains plants that have not been reported as having systemic effects on animals or as having intense effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Any plant material ingested by an animal (as when dogs and cats ingest yard grass) may produce signs of vomiting, depression, or diarrhea. These signs are generally mild and self-limiting and often do not require any treatment. " Here is the link for that.

So whatever you end up doing, good luck! It's good that you are paying attention to the environment your dog is in.

My humane society had a poisenous plants list. Check with them. I have a spider plant in the house and also a couple of christmas cactus. Outdoors I plant things like marigolds, petunias and salvias....I also have a native flower bed.....I live in the country there's alot outside naturally. Haven't had any mishaps in my whole life and I'm 45. Although there are so many exotic plants now......but I don't personally own any.
