Develop the tesla car into a viable consumer product. It is a pure electric car, and can outrun a porsche turbo or ferrari maranello for short distances. It still uses electricity, some of which is created from fossil fuels, but in a far more efficient manner.
Plus, I live in a small town, work at home, and buy most of my groceries at a local market. I may pay a couple of dollars extra, but I save that in gasoline and wear and tear on the vehicle. I walk to the local market, it is less than one mile away. Here we need more and better sidewalks, and maybe even bike paths for some transportation purposes. The university is 8 miles away. With a proper bike path, I could bicycle to school when I go back, and actually get there in about the same amount of time it takes to drive.
We could use more diesel, but I have reservations about that, even with the new standards. Plus, it really isn't much of a substitute for gasoline, it just comes from a different level in the refining process.
We could also use a better train service here in the states, both for metro areas and long distance travel. I don't know if that would work, because I hate buses, and am not sure trains would be any better.

It seems the question is broader and about energy consumption in general?
I think it's all the little things we should do.
Walk where we can.
Consider a hybred or at the very least, a fuel efficient car.
Ride a motorcycle where and when you can (more fun either way).
Turn off the lights and where needed, use energy efficient bulbs, they're more expensive, but worth it because of bulb life and reduced energy costs overall.
Buy energy efficient appliances.
Recycle.
Avoid using any aerosol products that damage the ozone.
Join a group to clean up the enviornment.
Peace :)

hi
there are several ways that our use of petrol can be decreased
one is what is known in the UK as car pooling
this is where rather than each individual at a company driving separate cars in to work they pick each other up
same goes for dropping the kids to school
why do people have big people carrier vans yet just one little kid bouncing about on there own
try using a bike or walk for those little journeys say for example to the local newspaper shop or friends house
there are many issues that need to be addressed to help slow down the affects of climate change
planting trees is a big issue plus stop cutting the ones down that we already have
turn lights of and other electrical equipment when not in use
we need to start taking action and spreading the word
its not so much for our sakes but our children's and grandchildren sakes
i am very a very passionate person when it comes to needing to do something about this as you may notice
i leave this link not only for you but anybody that reads this answer

Have city planners require more dense population centers before allowing expansion. Build up before building out so people could use more public transportation.
I've also thought there should be a carpooling website like Match.com. People that want to car pool put in their home address and work address and the website matches you up with other people that are going from and to the same place you are.

Walking more.
I don't like to drive so, my car stays at home and I walk to work everyday (about 2 km). If I'm tired by night, I call hubby or a cab to come back home.

People should walk more. I'm doing that right now and while it's not by choice, I'm starting to enjoy it :)
(I used to walk a lot when I was a teenager)
