Assult is a crime of violence against another person. It can be refered to as the actual crime against another person or just threatening it, it just depends upon where your from and what the laws in your area are. It becomes battery when actual physical violence occurs.

It can be as simple as hitting someone to as brutal as bludgening someone as not to result in death, which would the be murder not assult.
