before you download any skins, clothes etc you have to create a download folder in the sims2 directory. If you are using windows it will be found in my documents. next you need to extract any and all downloaded files to this folder. when you open the sims2 create a new family and everything that you downloaded will be there. it will show up with a star in the picture so you know that it's not a part of the original game.

Usually if you download a skin and extract it to your downloads folder, it should show up right away. The only time it won't show up is if you didn't download the 'mesh' for the skin. Go back to site you downloaded from and make sure the skins you downloaded don't have a corresponding mesh. Usually the creator will either provide a link to the mesh or include the mesh in the download. If there are no meshes, try to download the skin again and check all the clothing options (Everyday, Formal, etc) and see it if shows up. Also, you should check to see if the skin shows up in Body Shop, too. If you are still having issues, it won't hurt to contact the creator.

Firstly download a house so that a download folder becomes avalable. The extract the skins into that folder. Now when you enter the game next to all the skin tonest there will be a star. Click on it to get all the tones.

They should be available for use while creating a new character or editing a current one.
