There's only one reason.

If you cannot imagine your life without a PhD, then you must. If not, there's very little point.

What I mean is this: If you do not have a particular academic specialization about which you are completely passionate, PhD level study is not for you. If you're doing it for the money, think again. If you're doing it for the prestige, there is none. If you're doing it for anyone other than yourself, you won't make it.
