Without a doubt. Art, music and drama help children develop their voice in this world. What I mean by "voice" is a way of expressing themselves. You can teach children all the "basics"; language arts, mathematics, science, history...but those are concrete, unquestionable subjects. They're definitely important. You're not going to get a decent job without a decent background in the basics. However, art, music, and drama are just as important. The arts make students think for themselves.

With your basic classes, you're being taught the same processes that have been taught for years and years. With the arts you're taught to think and to express your opinions. Learning to cultivate that for children is so important if they're to succeed in this life. Children need the opportunity to express themselves in a setting where they're not going to be judged for what they think. It helps them gain the confidence they'll need as adults to let others know what they're thinking.

Yes, absolutely. Why? So that people can make a difference between garbage and real art, so that they can understand that music is NOT talentless young women (or men) shaking their half-naked bodies on MTV and that movies like Mission:Impossible are nothing but a bunch of special effects.

Yes it should, but I'd settle for the antiquated teaching of the 20th Century, where at least people learned the difference between "there", "their", and "they're." How can you even appreciate the arts if you can't spell Gauguin.

Yes, because people might not know what they are capable of until they learn more about it, or they might not take it as seriously as they should until they learn more about it.
