I know some may consider me stupid for asking this, but I need to know the two territories of the U.S. (and only 2). I know the 50 States, but there seem to be a lot of different opinions on the territories.

Please help!

The United States currently has only one incorporated territory, Palmyra Atoll. This has been the case since 1959, up to which point large parts of the United States were under the direct control of the federal government as organized incorporated territories, with some political autonomy at the territorial level.

American Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Islands are all territories of the United States. Washington, D.C. and the Northern Mariana Islands are commonwealths. Puerto Rico was once a territory, but is now a commonwealth.

The Southwest Territory, formally known as the Territory South of the River Ohio, was a historic, organized territory of the United States corresponding to modern-day Tennessee. It was formed by the Southwest Ordinance on May 26, 1790, out of land that was ceded to the U.S. federal government by North Carolina; it passed from existence with Tennessee's admission to the Union on June 1, 1796.

The name "Territory South of the River Ohio" suggests a much larger territory than modern-day Tennessee. Even though Kentucky was south of the Ohio River, it was still a part of Virginia when the Southwest Territory was organized in 1790, and it would stay part of Virginia until it became a state in 1792. The land south of modern-day Tennessee was either still claimed by Georgia or disputed with Spain. Part of it would be organized as the Mississippi Territory in 1798, two years after the Southwest Territory had passed from existence.

The Southwest Territory is not the same as the modern Southwestern United States.

The Northwest Territories (NWT; French, les Territoires du Nord-Ouest) is a territory of Canada.

Located in northern Canada, it is east of Yukon, west and south of Nunavut (Canada's two other territories), and north of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. It has an area of 1,171,918 square kilometres and a population of 41,861 as of July 1, 2006. Its capital has been Yellowknife since 1967.

Geographical features include the vast Great Bear and Great Slave Lakes, as well as the immense Mackenzie River and the canyons of the Nahanni River, a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Territorial islands in the Arctic Archipelago include Banks Island, Parry Peninsula, Prince Patrick Island, and parts of Victoria Island and Melville Island. The highest point is Mount Nirvana near the border with Yukon at elevation 2773 m (9098 ft).

There actually only, I think, 46 states, with about 4 so-called states actually being "commonwealths" and not states at all. Check it out!
