does anyone know how to mend a hole on a pair of cotton pants using a sewing needle and simple thread? no sewing machine.

If the pants are going to be worn hard-- I prefer to put a reinforcement patch on the back side-- and I use iron on patches. Choose a patch assortment kit that most likely matches your garmet-- follow the directions on the package and trim ( if needed) the patch-- place inside the pants-- pin if it's moving around-- and iron on from the outside-- covering the hole with a cloth of some sort-- after the patch is ironed in place, use the needle and thread and reinforce the patch.

If it's not too big and it's not in a stupid spot why dont you cover it with an applique? If its in a stupid spot then buy more then one and place them at other spots on the pants. Just for balance. Change them into semi decorated pants instead of plain.
