At camp miriam uses pottery wheel to make three bowls in 2 hours. Duane makes five bowls in 3 hours. so the above is the info now the question is (question)At the same pace how long will it take miriam to make a set of 12 bowls? At the same pace how long will it ake Duane to make a set of 12 bowls?

okay, so
m=miriam
d= duane
m= 3 bowls/2 hours= 1.5 bowls per hour
d= 5 bowls/3 hours= 1 2/3 bowls per hour
so, for miriam to make 12 bowls, her rate it 1.5 per hour-
12/1.5=8 hours
Duane's rate is 1 2/3 bowls per hour, so 1.66667/12= approximately 7.19 hours

It will take miriam 8 hours to make 12 and Duane 7 hours and 12 minutes. I set it up using cross multiplication. Miriam is 3/2=12/x 24/3=x 8=x. Duane is 5/3=12/x 36/5=x 7.2=x 2/10 of an hour is 12 minutes. HOpe this helps.

In 2 hr, Miriam can make 3 bowls
In 1 hr, Miriam can make bowls/hr i.e. 3/2 bowls
Let the number of hr to make 12 bowls be x,
In x hr, Miriam can make 12 / (3/2)
= 8 hours
In 3 hr, Duan can make 5 bowls
In 1 hr, Duan can make 5/3 bowls
Let the number of hour to make 12 bowls be x
x=12/(5/3)
x=7.1924 hr.
If you are doing this using proportion section,
then set the following equation :
3 = 12
--- ----
2 x
do a cross multiplication
3x = 24
x= 24/3
x =8 hr
Why you might as. This is because the proportion between hour used to make bowls is fixed irregardless on how many bowls you make or how many hours you used. The relationship between the number of bowls and the number of hour used will remain the same.
and
5 12
---- = -----
3 x
do a cross multiplication
5x=36
x=36/5
x=7.2hr
The slight different in the answer is due to rounding of decimal.

miriam= she takes 2 h for 3--> 4 h for 6--> 6 h for 9 --> 8 h for 12
duane= he takes 3 h for 5--> 6 for 10; so he takes 36 seconds for each bowl (3 hours=>180 min/5=36) so for 2 more he'd take 72 mins + the 6 hours he needs for 10 --> 7 hours and 12 min
In short:
m=8 hours
d=7 hours 12 min
I hope this helps!

Two ways to work this:
For Miriam, take the total number of bowls and divde by the number that she can make in a know period of time. Therefore, 12/3 = 4 . Therefore, she will have to make 4 sets of 3 bowls. Therefore, 4 sets * 2 hours/set = 8 hours
For Duane, take 12 bowls and divide by his number of bowls he can make in a known period of time. Therefore, 12/5 = 2.4 sets of bowls.
Therefore, he will tak 2.4 sets * 3 hours/set = 7.2 hours.
Second way:
For either one, you could also divide the time it takes to make a set by the number of bowls in the set to determine the time it takes to make each bowl. Then, take this time for each person and multiply that by 12 for the total number of bowls.
For Miriam, she makes 3 bowls in 2 hours or 1 bowl in 2/3 hours. So, it takes her 2/3 of an hour to make one bowl. Multiply 2/3 by 12 to get 8 hours for all 12 bowls.
For Duane, he makes 5 bowls in 3 hours or 1 bowl in 3/5 hours. So, it takes him 3/5 of an hour to make one bowl. Multiply 3/5 by 12 to get 7.2 hours for all 12 bowls.

Are you using algebra?
Miriam: let "x" be the number of hrs you are looking for.
3 bowls/2 hrs times "x" hrs = 12 bowls
solve for x
x = (12)(2)/3 = 8 hrs
Duane: 5 bowls/3 hrs times "x" hrs = 12 bowls
x = (12)(3)/5 = 7.2 hrs

miriam-1.5 bowls/one hour
duane-5 bowls/three hours
set up proportions....
miriam:
1.5/1=12/X
(bowls/hours....you know she can do 1.5 bowls in one hour, and at that rate you do not know how many hours for 12 bowls)
cross multiply, 1.5X=12
X=8
Miriam takes 8 hours to make 12 bowls.
duane....
5/3=12/X
5X=36
X=36/5 or 7.2
Duane takes 7.2 hours to make 12 bowls.
