Papillomaviruses are a diverse group of DNA-based viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes of humans and a variety of animals. More than 100 different human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been characterized. Some HPV types cause benign skin warts, or papillomas, for which the virus family is named. HPVs associated with the development of such "common warts" are transmitted environmentally or by casual skin-to-skin contact.

A separate group of about 30 HPVs are typically transmitted through sexual contact. Genital HPV infection is very common, with estimates suggesting that up to 75% of women will become infected with one or more of the sexually transmitted HPV types at some point during adulthood (Baseman and Koutsky, 2005). Some sexually transmitted HPVs, such as types 6 and 11, can cause genital warts. However, most HPV types that infect the genitals tend not to cause noticeable symptoms. Persistent infection with a subset of about a dozen so-called "high-risk" sexually transmitted HPVs, including types 16 and 18, can lead to the development of cancer of the cervix. HPV infection is a necessary factor in the development of nearly all cases of cervical cancer (Walboomers 1999).

this virus is a member of the herpes family but it is not the herpes that causes genital herpes or cold sores.
There are about 100 cousins in this hpv family and just over a dozen can cause abnormalities of the cervical cell. Most women clear this infection on their own but some are more susceptible to a prolonged infection and they are at risk for developing precanerous cahnges and cancer of the cervix. The other 90 or so are not dangerous but can be annoying.
they can caouse genital warts on men and women as well as warts on your fingers and soles of your feet. The good news is there are two vaccines that prevent infection with some of the more common and dangerous types . One of these was released last
august by Merk and the other is about to be released by GSK pharmaceuticals. go to you health care provider and dicuss this. Preferably some one with a specialty in women's health care. ie., an ob gyn, nurse midwife or nurse practitioner.

It is NOT herpes!!

It's a very common STD, statistics suggest between 1in 3 and 1 in 2 women will get it during their lifetime. In younger women, 30 and under, their immune systems will take care of it 50% of the time and it will go away. There are 4 strands of it that might cause cervical cancer. The average time it takes for severely abnormal cells to turn into cervical cancer is 7 years. My OB/GYN said if you have regular PAPs, you will never get cervical cancer.

My last PAP 6 months ago showed I have it. I just had a re-PAP and am waiting to get the results back to see if it's gone away or gotten worse. My sister also has it, but she got the one with the warts (the whore!). She also has cervical bleeding.

Human Papilloma Virus. In most cases it clears up on its own, but occasionally it can cause cervical cancer. They now have a vaccine that prevents contraction of the more common types of HPV.

Google it. Its definitely worth your time.
Its a virus, STD, Human Papillomavirus.
It affects the cervix. Since men don't have a cervix it doesn't bother them, they just pass it on to women. It doesn't really have any symptoms and sometimes it goes away on its own. But sometimes it can cause cancerous cells to develop in the cervix. With no symptoms. Make sure you get your pap smear done regularly!
