Invictus.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bloodgeonings of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

both, you make your own choices and so does everyone else, and all those choices affect your life

your choices and life's choices (which are results (situations) of everyone's choices) direct your life, no supreme being or predestined force

What's the moment shaped like?
Which phase is called into being
through the memory attached in so deep a space
that soul cannot emit through brain
and consciousness is dim as the black hole into which thoughts recede?
I can captain the persona, I can captain the waves of the sea, but the deepest undercurrents receive not my attention.
I can scuba dive, but then my boats are left prey to the submarine that is the evil of Life itself.
I can hold in my arms only two of my many children, I can keep in my sights only some of the many stories they write,
I can control only that which I can do with my own hands.
And the rest sweeps past, unannounced, unnoticed, till the things of the moment fold under ebb and a new tide washes over me...
or until I dive beneath for contemplation once again, leaving the minutae to drift awhile.

Definitely, the Captain of my Soul.

Most of my decisions are consciously directed, even those that are decided on a sub-conscious level, it is still me that is running the show, directing where my life is going in every aspect, and yes, the soul is in charge letting me know via instinct, emotions... what it feels comfortable and uncomfortable with guiding every step of the way.

I have been the victim of cicumstance many of times and expect many more and it's these circumstances, used like stepping stones, that have helped the captain of my soul, become a fine one indeed! Grrrrr!

I would say for myself that I am both a victim and a captain. There will always be things that happen we have no control over, but our response to what happens makes us a captain.
