I wish you had gone into more detail about why you aren't falling asleep fast. Are you a "i can't turn off person" or is there possibly a medical cause?
But, try this:
1. Darken your room as much as possible. Cover windows, digital clocks etc if necessary.
2. Lie flat of your back and close your eyes. In your head, sort through any events of your day that may need more attention. Decide which you are done with and those that will need your attention later (next day later, not at bed time).
3. Next, (if you are a religious or spiritual person) say a prayer, talk to your higher power of choice, whatever makes you feel comfortable (I say my prayers then talk to God like he was an old friend sitting in front of me.)
Before you know it the rooster will be crowing you awake. The whole point here is to relax and get your mind off of all distractions. When you are tense your body will not let you fall asleep or at least into a restful sleep.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugar. Don't take naps during the day. Don't read in bed or watch tv in bed. Do that in the living room. Don't eat late at night. If you are having trouble falling asleep and want to read, get up and read in another room. Make sure your room is conducive to sleeping: temperature, lighting, noise level. Make adjustments to the room as needed: put in shade, get a white noise machine, run the heater or air as needed.
I also find taking 2 Benedryl can help quiken sleep, although you don't want to do that regularly. Get a regular bedtime. Nighty night.

I always try really deep breathing
In the movie "The Girl In The Cafe" the female character told the male character that when she couldn't sleep she pretended she was an extra in a movie and that she was a dead body and had to lie really still....I thought that was cute. But I've never tried it.
I've also been known to take a Benadryl or NyQuil, if all else fails.

wel lol close your eyes is one of them, but you gotta lay flat on your back arms to the side. then stay in that possition, think of how to relax your body. think that your heart rate is diminishing, and that your body is at rest.finally just well think of stuff that u did during the day, waht you want done n stuff and well before you know it you will be hitting the dam snooze button at 6 am or something. you just crumble to sleep when your body is relax

Wake up earlier and exercise. Do physical labor throughout the day, and I guarantee you'll sleep like a rock. Your body will need to rest and your mind won't have time to take over.

First of all, read or watch t.v until you find you get sleepy (comes in about 20 min cycles) and then hop into bed. Try and blank your mind like you are trying to meditate. You can also try focussing on relaxing each body part in turn over and over and will soon find your mind drifts. If all else fails, masturbate!!!
