It's been done. Mindscape created the Norns in the game Creatures, which has seen several updates. Norns have a type of digital DNA where traits are passed down through generations, through a mating process that requires a male and female Norn.
UPDATE: I'm recalling an article I read about an upcoming title from Will Wright (SimCity, The Sims, etc.) called "Spore." This is the next-generation of digital DNA. It's about 1 year from release.

Yes and yes, just not like tron or the matrix yet, but it won't be long-15 to 20 years, probably. We're working on it.

Yes, but on a very basic level. Why do you think do we have to upgrade our antivirus software every now and then? There are known cases wherein computer viruses have learned to evolve to bypass the softwares that detect and delete them.
Just a few weeks ago a robot that thinks differently was invented, and the developers are saying it learns.
Who knows what the future brings.
