Because that is him, how he was brought up and what he learned from. If he lost it all, it would be like he didn't exist, his homeland didn't exist, he would never be rescued off that island, he would forget about his family, chaos would be entering is brain, you know bad stuff like that.

It's a desperate attempt to keep a grasp on civilization and home. That's all that's left to him of where he comes from.
