Disasters have destroyed the earth for millions of years but it somehow seems to regenerate and change and adapt, it would take something like an asteroid to completely obliterate it and if that happens there is nothing anyone or anything can do about it. I think it is a great idea to plan some colonization on some distant planet but the reality is this, what is to say you wont get to the new planet and boom that blows up. Then you wasted a millenia trying to get there when you could have spent the time fixing what you had. This sounds completely illogical as a scientific answer to me. What we should be doing is preparing for disaster and what to do when they happen so we too can rebuild and adapt to the new environment; maybe science would be best suited at trying to find ways to adapt to different earth environments as apposed to different planetary environments. What do surviving animals do when thier is a forest fire and thier environment is completely destroyed, they move, they change and they adapt they do not go running to another planet to do it and besides what we going to do with all the other species on earth leave em behind......take em with us, could they adapt there.....clearly its not for us to decide.

Good question. While other planets in the sun's solar system may be stepping stones, survival will ultimately depend upon establishing colonies in many alternative solar systems. The logical next step is to establish bases on asteroids. The asteroids could be hollowed out to provide living space for hundreds of thousands of people. A large population is needed to prevent genetic meltdown. The mass of the asteroids is low enough that they could become mobile, perhaps propelled with ion rockets powered by a nuclear power source. While engineering on this scale in space is beyond current capabilities, the fundamental science is known.

We need to take small steps. Disaster won't strike anytime soon, but it is good to prepare. I would first send a small group of scientists to colonize the moon, then send a volunteer group (maybe 100 people) to live there permanently and make the base better. Eventually we would send more and more people. From the moon we could organize missions to explore Mars and perform scientific experiments. Once we had enough money and organization we could send a team from the moon to colonize Mars, and so on from planet to planet. As the colonies are advancing, technology is also getting better so space travel and sustaining extraterrestrial colonies would be easier than it seems today.

Our best bet is to colonise Mars, but we'll have to terraform it. Some have put forth the idea of using satellites to convert the Sun's radiation and beam it down on the ice caps, melting them. It would take a lot of logistics we can't really handle right now. We would also need to introduce plants to form oxygen. The climate is pretty inhospitable and it would take many decades, possibly hundreds of years. Then again, if we get hit by an asteriod that's it for us. It's prudent to get off the home rock, just a tough sell to the public.

Nothing to do, the danger is there and it's real, if an asteroid hit it will be the end, no travel to another planets, that is not feasible at this point in time, the technology is just not there yet, on the other side if it's a nuclear war causing a chain reaction it will terminate all species on this planet, no way out.

I respect Stephen Hawking alot, but I don't think that we will be able to avoid a natural disaster on this planet. I think that we should focus our energies into saving this planet, and getting along with each other. By pooling our resources and minds, we may come up with alternatives.

Hey, that's a good question. That other guy is an idiot. I'm not quite sure how to answer it, though. I'll be thinking about it.
