I just purchased a violin and I can't get it to make any sound ... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I have to set it up or something ... how tight are the strings supposed to be? what about the bow? Please help ... I'm lost

lol

first you need some rosin/resin (same thing)
(its that brown stuff (or black)
it should come with some sandpaper to scratch it ( the white stuff after you scratch it is the good stuff)
you only need a little white stuff,
then, (forgive me for lack of a better word) lube up the bow with the rosin.

the strings on the bow, should be loose enough that your pinky fits snugly between the strings and the wood part

The violin really won't sound unless the bow is well rosined. Regarding how tight the strings are supposed to be, you will need to tune the instrument. A teacher or luthier should probably show you how, but see set-up and tuning page (with a free tuner), below:

Buy resin to let the bow stick to the strings (it should be at a music store or so) and just put it on the bow. The bow should be tight, and the resin should be wiped on the bow before you play.
