The world is not actually round. It is a spheroid (roughly round, but with a bit of a bulge at the equator). There are two reasons for this shape. First, gravity pulls all of the earth toward its own center. That accounts for the roundness of the planet. Second, the Earth rotates (making night and day). That rotation is west to east. Imagine spinning a globe. That spin (roughly 1,000 miles per hour) creates centrifical force which partially counters gravity at and near the equator such that the Earth takes on a bit fo a bulge at that point. The forces are not so strong that you would feel anything at the equator. Gravity will effect you and I essentially the same everywhere, but that is why the planet has its shape.

You know it's mostly water, right? Ever heard of surface tension? Consider that on a worldwide scale and you'll understand.
